Refugio Emilio Frey (Cerro Catedral)

At the southern (left-hand) end of the main car park at the Cerro Catedral ski center you will find a placard marked Refugio Frey. 300m after leaving the car park you will come to the main trailhead to Frey marked with another placard. The path begins crossing various streams, passing through an area of burnt forest with a view over Lago Gutiérrez. It continues on circling around the mountain and enters the valley of Arroyo (stream) Van Titter. After passing a trail that leads down to Villa Los Coihues you will cross the Van Titter river and begin climbing up the valley, passing the Piedritas shelter, to get finally after 1 hour, Refugio Frey. 
Difficulty: Easy / Medium. (The December to April).
Distance: 10 km
Elevation gain: 700 msnm.
Walking time: From 4 a 6 hours.
Access: Local bus (3 de Mayo) marked with “CERRO CATEDRAL” sign (bus stop at Calle Moreno 480).
Services at Refugio: Breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, overnight stay (with cooking facilities) and guided excursions of varying difficulty.

Refugio San Martín (Laguna Jakob)

The trail to Refugio San Martín begins at a place known as “Tambo”. 800m on the trail enters a forest of tall Coihue trees and then descends steeply to the banks of the Arroyo Casa de Piedra. Keep the river on your left until you reach a suspension bridge and cross over. From this point continue following the river, now on your right, until you again enter tall forest and begin slowly climbing. When you come across the river again and reach a metal ladder and a rope, cross the river and continue on for a further 45 minutes to reach the Refugio.
Difficulty: Easy / Medium. (The December to April).
Distance: 18 km
Elevation gain: 800 msnm.
Walking time: From 5 to 7 hours.
Access: Local bus (3 de Mayo) number 11 (only in January and February) or with prior reservation, with pick up from km10 of Av. Bustillo.

Refugio Manfredo Segre (Laguna Negra)

The entrance and placard for trail to Laguna Negra are located on the road exiting Colonia Suiza before the bridge over Arroyo Goye. The trail begins as an old vehicle track amongst Coihue and pine trees, and after a small initial climb begins crossing over canyons and steams until you reach the main Arroyo Goye. From there it continues through tall mallín type vegetation until you come to a large area known as the "Rancho Manolo". From this point the altitude begins to increase and you will start to climb up above the river crossing rocky terrain, finally hiking up the steepest part to access the Refugio.
Difficulty: Easy / Medium. (The December to January).
Distance: 14 km
Elevation gain: 800 msnm.
Walking time: From 5 a 7 hours.
Access: Local bus (3 de Mayo) numbers 10 or 11 (only in January and February).
Services at Refugio: Breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, overnight stay.

Field Camp (Campamento Móvil) at Paso de Las Nubes

The route to reach the camp site at the Paso de Las Nubes begins with an almost flat section from the Guardaparques of Pampa Linda (Pampa Linda rangers) using the first section of the route to Refugio Otto Meiling: 3km walking and a 50m gain in elevation brings you to a footbridge crossing the Río Castaño Overa. After crossing the river you must take the path to the right which leads down to the valley of Río Alerce; there keep the river to your left and you will enter a treeless area with mallín type vegetation. At the end of the valley you will enter a forest and start climbing up towards the Paso de los Nubes; from the top descend to reach the base of Glaciar Frías and find the camp site. To make a circuit back to Bariloche continue on (the next day) following Río Frias (keep it to your left). After four hours cross the river and continue on for a further hour to arrive at Puerto Frías. From there boats depart to Llao Llao’s Puerto Pañuelo, from where you can take local bus (3 de Mayo) number 20 back to Bariloche.

Distance: 35 km
Elevation gain: 450 msnm.
Walking time: 11hours (over two days).
Access: “Express Meiling” - 08:30am from CAB to Pampa Linda.

Refugio Otto Meiling ((Monte Tronador)

The first section of the route to reach Refugio Otto Meiling is almost flat and begins from the Guardaparques of Pampa Linda (Pampa Linda rangers). After a 3km walk and only a 50m gain in elevation, you will arrive at a footbridge crossing the Río Castaño Overa. After crossing the river a 500m climb over a distance of 6km begins which brings you to the top of a hill at a place called La Almohadilla (The Pillow). From there, the trail continues on more gently in a westerly direction arriving after 2km at the limit of the vegetation (a further gain in height of 150m) at a point known as the Descanso de los Caballos (The Rest of the Horses). From there you will begin the final ascension to the Refugio, 3km further trekking with a gain of 350m in height along a ridge above the vegetation line; follow the markers painted on rocks to the shelter of Refugio Otto Meiling.

Distance: 14 km
Elevation gain: 1050 msnm.
Walking time: From 5 a 7 hours.
Access: “Express Meiling” - 08:30am from CAB.
Services at Refugio: Food at all hours, overnight stay and guided excursions of varying difficulty.

Camping and Shelter Los Rápidos

Location One hour from Bariloche on the shores of Lago Mascardi and Río Manso. The journey from Bariloche passes Lagos Gutiérrez and Mascardi on a section of Ruta 40 until km37 at Villa Mascardi, 45 minutes from Bariloche; there one turns right taking the road for Cerro Tronador and the Casada (waterfall) de los Alerces. After reaching the bridge that crosses Río Manso continue on for a further 8km to reach the campsite.
Camping Amenities: 6 hectares of camping amongst trees; sandy beaches on the shores of Lago Mascardi and the banks of Río Manso. The camping area is equipped with grills and power outlets. The main building has a dining service, minimarket, kiosk and shelter, and the shelter consists of two large rooms with sleeping capacity and pillows.

Refugio Berghof (Cerro Otto)

The road leading to the summit of Cerro Otto begins opposite the petrol station located at Km1 of Av. de los Pioneres. 100m to the left also begins a walking and biking trail which later links up with the road near the top. You will pass the winter activities centre Piedras Blancas 1km before reaching the Refugio.
Difficulty: Easy. (All year).
Distance: 7 km
Elevation gain: 600 msnm.
Walking time: From 2 to 2 ¾ hours.
Access: Local bus (3 de Mayo) numbers 50 or 51 until km1 of Av. de los Pioneros or own vehicle.

Refugio Neumeyer (Valle del Challhuaco)

Take the southbound Ruta 40 out of Bariloche and after 5km turn left at the roundabout. Follow the ripio (rubble road) for 3km to reach the Challhuaco complex car park. From there a 9km walk crossing various streams leads to Refugio Neumeyer. From the Refugio there are a number of trails; some are suitable for families.
Distance: 19km from the centre of Bariloche.
Access: Own vehicle or consult 02944 428995 for excursions.
Services at Refugio: House beer, snacks, traditional foods of the region and homemade desserts.

Camping Pampa Linda

Location: Pampa Linda, at the base of Monte Tronador. Accessed by passing Camping Los Rápidos and continuing a further 30km on the same road.
Camping Amenities: Camping area, grills, bathrooms and showers, restaurant, cooking and dining cabin and minimarket.
